The notorious stretch of the New England Highway between Armidale and Black Mountain was closed for over 6 hours last night due to a horror crash.

A single vehicle left the road and had rolled at about 6.20pm last night, five kilometres north of Sunnyside Road near Tilbuster.

Police, ambulance, fire and SES all attended the scene where the female driver was trapped in the wreckage and needed to be freed. The highway was closed in both directions until the scene was cleared around 1am.

The woman was treated at the scene by paramedics with serious head injuries before being taken to Armidale Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

There were no passengers in the car and no other vehicles were involved. New England Police established a crime scene and have started an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

As inquiries continue, police are appealing for anyone who may have information or dashcam vision to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

The section of the New England Highway where the crash happened is known for the number of serious accidents, including a truck accident less than 3 months ago. A B-Double roll over at almost the exact same location in 2020 also closed the road in both directions for many hours.
