The Armidale Folk Museum will soon be adding iPads and touchscreens to their experience, providing more information and context to the historical items on display.

Member for Northern Tablelands Adam Marshall announced the State Government grant of $28,642 to purchase the new equipment at a visit to the Armidale Folk Museum with Armidale Regional Council Mayor Sam Coupland recently.

The pair met with some of the volunteers and staff and learn more about their plans to make it a more contemporary museum.

“Armidale Regional Council, along with the museum’s volunteers and staff, have been working to improve their displays and protect the objects they have within the collection,” Mr Marshall said.

“Along with the iPads and touchscreens, they will be purchasing some new museum standard display cases to replace those that are not fit for purpose.

“They will also be purchasing new mannequins and rope barricades to improve some of the display areas.

“The introduction of digital content will provide visitors with a lot more information on the historical items in the collection, improving the understanding of our region’s history and its vast array of pioneering families.

“We can also appreciate that with a younger audience, they are more likely to be interested in following their parents or teachers around a museum if they have some modern technology to interact with.

Mayor Sam Coupland said that thanks to the funding from the State Government, the Folk Museum would be made more contemporary and attractive to school groups and visitors.

“Our Folk Museum has a rich history which we’re very proud of,” Cr Coupland said.

“This funding will allow us to complement the historical physical displays with the interactive digital displays which will be more engaging for our community and visitors.”
