ZNET Uralla is holding a free ‘Summer Surplus’ preserving workshop coming up on Saturday 21 January at the Uralla Neighbourhood Centre.
Working on Waste Coordinator Heidi McElnea says all are invited to come and learn how to make tomato passata, delicious pickles and preserve summer fruits using the Vacola method.
There is no cost to attend the workshop which will cover making:
- Passata/pasta sauce
- Drying tomatoes and fruit
- Fruit preservation
- Pickles
ZNET’s Sandra Eady (pictured) will join Trish Rasmussen to share their tips and tricks on preserving food.
“It’s part of our Working on Waste project which looks at ways we can repurpose and reuse and reduce what we send to our local landfill,” Heidi said.
ZNET is a community group that was established five years ago to support the town of Uralla and surrounding villages to lessen their carbon emissions.
Over that time, projects have included home energy reviews (with strategies for reducing costs and electricity use), assistance with rooftop solar set-ups, investigation of water security, livable landscapes and sustainable firewood.
The Preserving Workshop is part of ZNET’s Working on Waste project, which focuses on sharing skills with each other around resourcefulness and diverting materials from landfill. The project is funded by a grant from Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal, which covers all workshop costs.
The workshop runs for 4 hours, from 10am to 2pm, on Saturday January 21. Lunch and a take home jar will be provided. Those wanting to attend should book online at https://summersurplus.eventbrite.com.au.
