A critical incident investigation is underway after police shot dead Corey Selby, a 48 year old father of two, in Tenterfield yesterday.

Mr Selby was shot in a conflict out the front of the Tenterfield Police Station, after he pointed a gun at officers just before 6pm on Thursday. Police and NSW Ambulance paramedics tried to save his life but he died at the scene.

Acting regional commander Steve Egginton said it was a “tragic set of circumstances,” but the officer had no option but to shoot the man.

“But at the end of the day, if someone points a firearm at them, they need to defend themselves.”

Acting commander Egginton said police had “some limited interactions with the man in past.”

It is understood a domestic violence incident happened prior to the shooting.

A neighbour claimed Selby waved a weapon out the front of his family home and threatened his wife, Cindy, inside. Cindy then drove to the police station with their two children while neighbours called police.

Mr Selby arrived at the police station, rifle in hand, where he was shot in front of onlookers. NBN News has obtained footage of the confrontation from locals.

A critical incident team comprised of officers from State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad will now investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the discharge of a police firearm.

That investigation will be subject to independent review.
