The Moree chapter of OzFish Unlimited, is hosting an informal get-together at the Moree RSL club on the 29th of March to celebrate the future of fishing in Moree.
The ‘Fish talks’ are a meet-up for recreational fishers and stakeholders to discuss the success of the healthy rivers project and will also celebrate the opening up of access to Mehi and Gwydir rivers for rec fishers and revegetation of the (access) sites.
OzFish Unlimited is a not-for-profit charity dedicated to helping Aussie recreational fishers take control of the health of their rivers, lakes and estuaries. They work with fishers to make fishing grounds healthier, more vibrant and more productive, share ideas on how to improve and protect fish habitat and also seek grants for hands-on habitat restoration.
The healthy rivers project is a nationally-funded rivers and wetlands conservation initiative that aims to improve habitat and re-establish remnant native vegetation which will ultimately improve water quality and river health.
$1 million dollars in funding was allocated for four projects in the Parks electorate in 2022 under the Healthy Rivers Program that included $93,250 for OzFish Unlimited to work with traditional owners and recreational fishers to enhance river habitat around Moree by re-snagging the river with 10 habitats for native fish species, controlling woody weeds and planting riparian vegetation.
The program is funded through the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program, a $1 billion dollar program to support a range of measures across natural resource management, sustainable agriculture and to protect Australia’s biodiversity.
Speakers for the evening event at Moree include Harry Davey of OzFish Unlimited, Kerrie Saunders-Yinarr-Ma Bush Tucker Tours and Daryl Albertson from the Department of Planning and Environment.
Nationwide, OzFish Unlimited has amassed over 9000 supporters across 51 local chapters resulting in close to 150,000 volunteer hours and 150 improved waterway systems. They are Australia’s only fishing conservation charity
Registration for the event is essential.
