In the last days of the election campaign, the leading candidates for Tamworth have both made announcements about sporting facilities.
Incumbent Nationals member Kevin Anderson has made announcements yesterday about $1.7m in funding approved before the election to upgrade Piallamore Recreation Reserve and No. 1 Oval in Tamworth. Meanwhile, leading alternative Labor’s Kate McGrath has committed $80,000 to support North West Mountain Bikers.
Anderson re-announced the $270,000 for Piallamore Recreation Reserve upgrades and $1.5m for upgrades at No. 1 Oval for upgrades including the construction of male and female amenities, extension of changerooms, and the construction of an umpire/officials room. Both were under the Stronger Country Communities Fund.
“Upgrades to sport and recreation facilities are critical because they are the facilities our communities go to get active and blow off a bit of steam at the end of a long working week.”
“That’s why upgrades to the amenities at the Piallamore Recreation Reserve and No. 1 Oval are worth fighting for.”
“When we invest in public facilities, more and more members of our communities use them, bringing us together and promoting a healthy lifestyle,” Mr Anderson said.
McGrath announced yesterday that NSW Labor will contribute up to $80,000 to support North West Mountain Bikers to build adaptive trail, to increase accessibility and encourage beginner involvement in mountain biking.
North West Mountain Bike Club has actively supported adaptive cyclists and inclusive riding within their community and seek to undertake redevelopments at Mount Borah’s riding trails, including the widening of the trails to cater to increased participation from adaptive mountain bikers.
“North West Mountain Bike Club have a vision to make the Mt Borah trails accessible to everyone with a passion for mountain biking,” McGrath said.
“This initiative will ensure adaptive trails are suitable for families, people with a disability, and beginners to the sport.”
“Promoting the facilities available in Manilla will help attract people to the town and enhance the existing tourism opportunities created through paragliding at Mt Borah.”
Andrew Dehm, President of North West Mountain Bikers, said the funding would allow the club to create an up climb to better access the existing trails and host more mountain biking events.
“The climbing trail will be constructed as a bidirectional trail that will accommodate all rider abilities and allow access for adaptive cycles as well.”
“We are confident that this project will support the club’s 5 year plan that includes increasing female and adaptive rider participation in the sport of mountain biking.”
