Local organisations including memorial trusts, veteran groups and local councils can now apply for funding to refresh and renew community war memorials, with the NSW Government’s Community War Memorials Fund opening today.
Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson said Anzac Day was a special reminder of the importance of maintaining and preserving historic memorials throughout our communities.
“Anzac Day is a solemn day on which we gather alongside memorials right across the region to commemorate the service of those who fought to protect our way of life,” Mr Anderson said.
“War memorials are at the centre of our remembrance and serve as a permanent reminder of the sacrifice of generations of Australians.”
“That’s why it’s so important that we continue to provide the funding necessary to maintain and preserve our community memorials, because without them, we lose touch with a significant part of our nation’s story.”
Grants are available to cover projects like conservation assessments, honour roll repair, environmental advice, cleaning, and repairs to war memorial halls.
Organisations including memorial trusts, veteran groups and local councils can apply.
“I’m inviting local community groups and organisations responsible for the upkeep of these memorials to apply for up to $10,000 in funding to ensure that we are able to continue the tradition of commemorating Anzac Day for generations,” Mr Anderson added.
“Previous rounds of funding have seen memorials in Manilla, Gunnedah, Tamworth, Barraba and Attunga preserved and I want to see even more funding dedicated to our war memorials, particularly those in our smaller communities.
“The NSW Department of Veterans Affairs also has a wealth of information and advice for our community groups and organisations available online.”
