Guyra local Aileen MacDonald has been promoted to the front bench of the NSW opposition by new Liberal Leader Mark Speakman, taking on the portfolio of Youth Justice.

Prior to entering parliament to serve in the Legislative Council, Mrs MacDonald worked as a Community Corrections Officer and is very aware of issues in this sector. Her previous role working with adults in community corrections means she is well placed to represent the issues and concerns of those in the Youth Justice sector, applying the expertise and skills acquired during 10 years with the Corrective Services NSW.

Mrs MacDonald said she was honoured have been appointed Shadow Minister for Youth Justice.

“I am determined to engage with stakeholders and to ensure the clear vision and goals of Youth Justice, and especially the wellbeing of youth currently within the Youth Justice network, remains the focus of all involved, and to ensure that community safety is a top priority,” Mrs MacDonald said.

Mrs MacDonald says she acknowledges that behaviour change can be difficult; however, the vision of Youth Justice is to empower young people to fulfil their potential without offending so that they can thrive in the community.

“This is done through community-based intervention and programs that provide tools which assist and empower young people in contact with Youth Justice to make better choices in their lives.”

Mrs MacDonald said she is proud to have been asked to be a part of the team led by Mark Speakman and to contribute to the overall effort of keeping the NSW Government accountable and delivering for the people of NSW.

“Our focus moving forward is to operate as a constructive opposition and, as Mr Speakman said on his election as the Opposition Leader, we will be offering support where it is warranted and hold the Government to account where they fail the community.”

“We will make sure Labor deliver on their promises and serve the people rather than union bosses and vested interests.”

Other shadow cabinet announcements include two former ministers returning to the front bench: Matt Kean as shadow health minister, and Damien Tudehope as shadow treasurer.
