This Legacy Week is set to be an extraordinary milestone in the organisation’s history, as they commemorate 100 years of making a positive impact. From Sunday August 27th to Saturday September 2nd, Legacy volunteers will be out in force, raising much needed funds in their major fundraising campaign for the year.
Legacy Week is a time to give back to the families of those who have given so much. Over the past century, Legacy has had a positive effect on countless lives, providing support to vulnerable children, assisting families in need and offering aid to those affected by adversity.
The Legacy Week appeal has been running since the 1940’s and is a time for all Australians to show their support for the immediate families whose loved ones have stood up and served our country. Volunteers and Legatees will be selling their iconic Legacy Bears and badges throughout the New England, as part of this nationwide fundraising effort.
The Legacy Club of Inverell is calling upon the local community to buy a badge this Legacy Week to help continue its work in providing financial and social support. Inverell Legacy currently supports 99 veterans’ family members, including 16 children. Services provided include education support, home visits, personal alarms, accommodation & financial assistance.
Inverell Legacy Club President, Rick Ellis said “the need for our services has not diminished, in fact the number of younger families needing our help is increasing. We recently enrolled 2 new families, bringing the total number of young families that we support to 8. We would like to encourage the families of any veterans who have not yet registered with Legacy to contact us. As long as there is one beneficiary, Legacy will continue to exist.”
To engage the next generation in understanding the importance of the ongoing support provided by the Legacy Club, Inverell Legacy has involved many local schools. A schools ‘Legacy Week’ poster competition received 653 entries, with the 1st prize posters currently on display at the Inverell Gallery until Friday 8th September. Students from Macintyre High and Holy Trinity will also be helping man the stalls.
“Our children are our future. It is important to include the school students to provide additional assistance during Legacy Week & it is a great opportunity to teach them about Legacy. Some of the students who will be volunteering during Legacy Week are Inverell beneficiaries,” said Mr Ellis
Inverell Legacy will have numerous stalls across the town centre on Thursday, Friday & Saturday, as well as the Legacy Centre with a full range of Legacy merchandise, including some limited-edition ‘Centenary’ items. Stalls will be located in Bingara and Texas as well. Legacy branches in towns in the New England will also host stalls in prominent locations across the region.
Volunteers are urgently needed to help with this major annual campaign. If you can spare a few hours to help this worthy cause, please contact Inverell Legacy on 02 6722 1945 or email inverell.legacy@gmail.com, or your local branch.
The Legacy badge is a special emblem of support for veterans’ families, symbolising Australia’s greatest values of mateship, compassion and fairness. Legacy badges may be small but the funds they raise make a big difference in the lives of veterans’ families.
