Tamworth has been chosen as the location for the 2024 Murray Darling Association Conference and Annual General Meeting.
The Murray Darling Association is the peak body for the local governments in the basin. It seeks to inform the public about the many issues surrounding the management of the Murray-Darling Basin and what is being done to ensure sustainable management of the basin resources. The organisation represents and coordinates the views of 167 bodies representing the communities who live in and rely on the Murray Darling Basin.
The announcement was made last week at the 2023 Murray Darling Association Conference and in Murray Bridge, South Australia. It is understood it will be the first time the event will be held in the northern part of the Murray-Darling Basin.
Tamworth Regional Council and the Murray Darling Association Region 11 made a joint submission to host the event.
Region 11 covers 15 local government area with nine being members. They are Gunnedah Shire Council, Brewarrina Shire Council, Gwydir Shire Council, Coonamble Shire Council, Walgett Shire Council, Glenn Innes Severn Shire Council, Liverpool Plain Shire Council, Tenterfield Shire Council and Tamworth Regional Council. Tamworth joined in October last year.
Tamworth Region Mayor Russell Webb has attended the conference this week along with Director Water and Waste Bruce Logan and Gunnedah Mayor Jamie Chaffey who is Region 11 Chair.
About 150 delegates are expected to attend the association’s 80th conference in Tamworth in July 2024.
