A new initiative could see the picturesque Castledoyle Road corridor, outside of Armidale, become a beacon for the community.
Residents are continuing their push to see the proposed ‘Castledoyle Cylceway’ take shape, in a what would create a series of safe cycling and walking tracks for Armidale.
“The Castledoyle Cycleway project marks a significant step toward enhancing the overall well-being and sustainable development of our community,” said John Willoughby, the Project’s instigator.
“By providing a dedicated safe space for cyclists and walkers, we aim to promote a culture of wellness, eco-consciousness, and social engagement within our vibrant Castledoyle neighbourhood.”
In collaboration with local community groups, businesses, and the proposal put to Armidale Regional Council, the project will integrate eco-friendly transportation and recreational opportunities for residents and visitors alike.
It is hoped the proposed tracks will offer a safe and inviting route for cyclists and walkers, encouraging a healthy and active lifestyle while fostering community connections and a sense of belonging.
The proposal has been driven by community concern for the safety of cyclists using Castledoyle Road, particularly the section from the Mann St intersection to Mays Road intersection.
The group has developed a plan to take existing assets while constructing extra elements to deliver a network of cycleways and walkway that will enhance Armidale lifestyle, health, and tourism.
The project proposal has been presented to Armidale Regional Council and Local Member, Adam Marshall, as well as being highlighted to a recent workshop on Council’s Active Transport Strategy, to be released late this year.
It is hoped Council will adopt the proposal as part of the Active Transport Strategy, and open opportunities for funding avenues.
And they are calling for local support to get behind them.
“We encourage all residents, local businesses, and community leaders to join us in making this project a great example of sustainable and safe transport and recreation,” said John.
The project is currently in the early planning phase, with awareness raising and project scoping being the main priorities.

The Three Elements of the Castledoyle Cycleway Proposal:
- Gungurru Gaitway: A gentle 5K walk from Quota Park and return, via shared Wild Rivers Cycleway to Dances Lane , through to Waterfall Way and west back to Quota Park.
- Imbota Mountain Bike Trails: Quota Park, Wild Rivers Cycleway to Mays Road, Long Swamp Road to Imbota Nature Reserve (fire trails) , Wild Rivers Cycleway return to Quota Park.
- Wild Rivers Cycleway: Quota Park to Oxley Wild Rivers National Park/ Bluehole, and return.
