Students from our local schools including Calrossy, Farrer, and The Armidale School have achieved extraordinarily high results in this year’s HSC.
Many ATARs above 90 are being reported by graduates from most schools in the region, with social media full of congratulations and excitement, and a long list of local students getting Band 6 (the top band) results in their various subjects.
The Armidale School student Louis Ross thought he had done “quite well” with a mark of 99 in Engineering Studies placing second in the State in the subject. He also achieved Band 6 results in Physics and Maths Extension 1 and is the TAS Dux, with an Australian Tertiary Admission Ranking of 98.8, believed to be one of the highest in the region this year.
“To come second in the course is just awesome – I really can’t believe it. I’m sure my teacher Mr Shortt
won’t be able to either,” Louis said.
Louis’ results headline solid achievements for TAS in this year’s HSC which include seven students with
Australian Tertiary Admission Ranking above 90 and 20 students achieving Band 6s in 15 subjects.
Also achieving a mark of 99 was Wylie Wright, in Mathematics Standard. Emily Thompson gained a
perfect score of 50 in Music Extension – just one highlight for Creative Arts at TAS, with five of nine Drama students achieving Band 6s; William Nash selected for the HSC Drama Showcase OnSTAGE, and Band 6s also achieved by students in Music 1 and Visual Arts.
TAS Principal Dr Rachel Horton congratulated the Class of 2023 on their achievements.
“There have been some amazing individual results across a wide range of subjects, and more broadly,
many students achieving their best.
“The most important thing is that so many of them have got into the courses or pathways of their choice, and we wish them well as they head out into the world,” Dr Horton said.
Louis Ross was pipped by Farrer Memorial Agricultural High School graduate Lewis Shepherdson was one of the state all-rounders, receiving a mark of 99.45 and Band 6’s across his subjects. But the highest known score in the region goes to Calrossy’s Larissa Smyth who scored an all rounder achievement, placed eighth in the state for Modern History, and received an ATAR of a whopping 99.90.
Calrossy students had a stunning performance with Ella Ward achieving the highest marks in the state for Primary Industries Examination. She was joined by classmate Olivia Collins who came fourth in the same class. Charlotte Bedggood came an impressive sixth in Textiles and Design, while Leila Ryan and Mia Cosentino came seventh and eighth respectively in Investigating Science, giving the school a total of six students amongst the top achievers in their classes. Calrossy delivered 53 high scores in total, and retains the distinction of being the highest ranking school in the region.
O’Connor Catholic College student, Jasmine Hockey was a Top Achiever placing 8th in the state for Hospitality, while Molly Owen of Quirindi High School, who came 7th in the state in Music 1 with a mark of 99, and an overall ATAR of 91.4, has already booked her place at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
