Herefords Northern NSW Youth Group will once again hold their Youth Camp in Glen Innes. The camp, held at Glen Innes Showgrounds from the 12th to 14th of January, allows young cattle enthusiasts aged 7-25 to learn the tricks of the trade and meet likeminded individuals.
Emily Taylor, the current president of the Northern NSW Youth Group of Herefords NSW, says that this will be their biggest year to date.
“We have 108 competitors and 120 cattle for 2024, which is up considerably from last year’s event,” says Ms Taylor.
The camp itself offers a series of educational lectures, as well as an opportunity for attendees to compete in junior judging, parading, and handling and herdsperson competitions.
“The camp always attracts a really broad range of people,” says Ms Taylor.
“We have all experience levels. Some people have come from the city and have been exposed to a bit of cattle handling at school, and others come from the local studs and have a lot of experience.
“The camp offers something for all.”
The camp even provides loan animals for any participants that don’t have access to their own cattle to show.
Entries for this year’s camp are now closed but Ms Taylor says that those who are interested are always more than welcome to pop down as a spectator to learn more about the group.
“We’re here for anyone who wants to learn more about cattle handling, and we aim to inspire and educate youth who have an interest in the beef industry,” she says.
“It also offers a lot of really practical real-life skills,” says Ms Taylor, “There’s public speaking, and social skills and the opportunity to make lots of new friends.”
The Youth Group holds monthly meetings outside of the camp, and Ms Taylor says all in the age range are welcome.
