Nominations are now open for the biennial Tamworth Heritage Awards.
The Tamworth Regional Heritage Awards celebrate and recognise outstanding contributions to heritage preservation and promotion within the region. Nominations are open now and close at 5pm on Thursday March 21, with the winners to be announced on Friday April 19.
The biennial awards cover diverse categories, reflecting the multifaceted heritage tapestry of Tamworth. The categories include:
- Warren Newman Memorial for Contribution to Heritage within the Region
- Aboriginal Cultural Heritage
- Adaptive Reuse
- Building Conservation
- Heritage Resources, Tourism, Education, and Interpretation and Publication
- Sympathetic Development
Councillor Helen Tickle, Chairperson of the Tamworth Regional Heritage Working Group, emphasised the importance of the Heritage Awards in showcasing the rich heritage of the region.
“These awards play a special role in preserving Tamworth’s heritage and recognise those who are striving to share pieces of heritage with the community”.
Previous winners include Eric Scott, recognised for his considerable commitment and contribution to the preservation of the Australian Country Music Hall of Fame, Leanne Summers for the beautiful restoration to the historic Bendemeer Hotel, and Narree & Campbell McIntosh for transformation of Dungowan Station’s woolshed into a micro-brewery and an event venue that can cater for weddings and other functions.
The Awards ceremony taking place at the Tamworth Regional Gallery will also launch the start of the 2024 Tamworth Regional Heritage Festival. The festival itself will run for ten days until Sunday 28 April, and will feature a host of events across the region to celebrate the many facets of our heritage. There will also be daily exhibitions open across numerous facilities during the Festival.
