Get ready to run, walk, or anything in between for the upcoming Mother’s Day Classic Inverell charity event, encouraging locals to get out and about to help raise money for breast cancer research.
Locked in for May 12 at the Off Road Recreation track at Lake Inverell Dr, a 10 kilometre run will start at 7:30am, followed by the 5 kilometre run at 7:45am. The main event, a 5 kilometre walk begins at 8am.
Karla Barlow, a member of the Mother’s Day Classic committee, said everyone is welcome to sign up for activities and attend, regardless of what region of New England they call home.
“Everyone is welcome; come out from Guyra, Glen Innes, Armidale, wherever. Make a team, walk with grandma, your children, by yourself, it’s up to you,” she said.
“We are the only ones in the district with a local Mother’s Day classic. There are heaps around the capital cities, but we are the only ones in the North West, so it’s a great way to support the cause locally,” Karla added.
If the thought of a lovely day out in the Autumn sun isn’t enough to pique your interest, perhaps the food will.
With the support of local businesses, butchers, bakers, and Woolworths Inverell, the Mother’s Day Classic will offer an array of food: bacon, eggs, gluten-free doughnuts, coffee, and more.
All funds raised through ticket sales, registrations and food stalls will go to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
“Come for breakfast, come for the run, spend the day at Inverell for Mother’s Day,” Karla said.
“It’s also a good way to learn more about breast cancer and how aggressive it is, spark conversation around getting regular checkups, and help dispel myths such as the age barrier, there is no such thing, it can affect anyone.”
At the moment, the local Mother’s Day Classic committee holds events every two years; this will be the second held at Inverell.
Karla says the first event, held in 2022, raised over $22,000, and while the committee would be thrilled to match that feat this year, it has another goal in mind.
“This time we hope for more people to attend. Last time 268 people registered, so we would really love to crack the 300 mark. We’d be pretty stoked with that,” she said.
According to Karla, the track itself might also be worth coming down to check out on the day, given that the Off Road Recreation track is a relatively new addition to the town.
“That track hasn’t been long established; this will likely be one of the first big events being held there,” she said.
“Lots of people probably know it’s there, but have not actually been in yet. It’s a beautiful place to be quite early in the morning, it’s safe too, there is no traffic and there are plenty of amenities.”
