All this week Uralla Golf Club will play host to the NSW Veteran Golfers Association (VGA) Week of Golf program, with four days of play on the course.
Scheduled from April 15 to April 19, the Uralla Week of Golf is part of the VGAs circuit of over 55s golf events organised across the state.
Uralla Golf Club convener Rowan Chandler told the New England Times prizes are on offer for every event in the Week of Golf. There are also 130 players locked in for each day, with at least 100 visitors making up the numbers.
According to Chandler, the Week of Golf generates so much interest the club had to “close the books about two months ago.”
“We have players coming from as far afield as Victora and Canberra, and all through New South Wales right up to Townsville,” he said.
“A lot are travelling golfing grey nomads,” Chandler added.
At the end of the week, an overall male and female champion will be crowned and receive the NSW VGA Sheild. However, Chandler says the emphasis is on having an enjoyable time more than anything.
“Golf can get a bit too serious sometimes. So for our week of golf, we try and break that down, make it a relaxing, fun and enjoyable experience for all our visitors and local golfers,” he said.
According to Chandler on Monday, the first day of play, competitors went to the green at 9:30am for a Medley Irish Team 4BBB Stableford. Marj Chappell, Margaret McReady, Jack Mitchell and Noelene Porter with a great score of 90 points all managed to come away with a win.
Tuesday will feature a men’s and ladies’ Individual Stableford, which will be the first round of the 36-hole NSW VGA Shield events. Wednesday will be a rest day, so everyone will be fresh for the men’s and ladies’ Individual Stableford and the second round of the 36-hole NSW VGA Shield events on Thursday.
