The Armidale School will be looking at re-gaining two coveted pieces of silverware when it meets Farrer Memorial Agricultural High School for competition in seven sports in Tamworth on Thursday.
In chess, debating, football, hockey, rugby shooting and tennis, students will be vying for points for the Dick Hodgson Shield, named after a former TAS sportsmaster and currently held by Farrer.
The ultimate match, between the schools’ Firsts XV, will be for the other star prize, the Jim Levy Shield, named after a former Deputy Principal of Farrer and won by Farrer last year.
In competitions of a more cerebral nature, Junior and Senior IVs will match up in impromptu debates and chess from 12:00pm.
There will be three football fixtures on Farrer’s No. 5 Oval, the 14s kicking off at 1:00pm, the 16s at 2:00pm and the Opens at 3:00pm. Shooting will take place at Calibre Country range, from 12:00pm, whilst at the same time, the Firsts hockey teams from each school will play at Tamworth Hockey Centre. Tennis will be served up from 1:00pm.
The largest sport contested will again be rugby, with seven fixtures commencing at 1:00pm and culminating with the First XV clash on Farrer’s No. 1 Oval at 4:00pm.
“The two schools have a long history of rivalry on the paddock and this year’s top rugby fixture should be no different, with our boys very keen to reclaim the Jim Levy Shield,” TAS Director of Rugby AJ Whalley said.
“It’s fantastic that over the years it has expanded to competition in seven sports and the whole
fixture is an absolute highlight on our co-curricular calendar.”
