If you like picnics, ponies, old school punting and parades of fashion, you need to get to this year’s Wean Amateur Picnic Races.

Boasting a range of family fun activities, the event event is ready to turn in on for 2024, in its 91st year.

“The ground’s looking exceptionally good,” said Wean Amateur Races President, Robert Gross.

And while the horses are the showcase of the day, long-time event goers know it is the fashions on the field that captures the lead up.

This years’ dress theme is Highland Fling.

“If you want to turn up in kilt or tartan that’s good. It just adds to the final of the day,” said Robert.

But make sure you dress to the weather. The races are notorious to start of a little on the cooler side.

“As a general rule, we get a very cool early morning and then it breaks into a pretty nice day.”

Organisers expect to draw over 3,000 people to track on Saturday, July 13,

“Come out and enjoy yourselves,” said Robert.

“There is music throughout the day and there is great food. We’ve got about four different choices of food and good coffee vans, and you can’t forget about the bar.”

“You get to put a punt on, which is obviously what racers like to come out and try and win their money back.”

While Robet wouldn’t give away any secret tip or punting leads, the only thing he would bet on was a good time for all.

“We just really appreciate the people that come and support the day, and all our sponsors who continue to back us.”

“We hope you have fun.”
