Werris Creek can continue their highly successful season by winning their way into not just one but four Whitehaven Coal Group 4 Grand Finals at their home David Taylor Park on Saturday.
The Creek have all four sides in the Preliminary Finals against Moree, Kootingal, North Tamworth and Boggabri.
“It’s unbelievable really for such a little club like us,” said first grade coach Dave Stewart.
On the other hand, Boggabri Kangaroos, are heading to Werris Creek determined to win a first grade Grand Final berth by beating the Creek.
“It’s a daunting task,” said Boggabri first grade coach Shane Rampling.
“The Creek have got all four teams in at home. They have massive support, we’re looking forward to the challenge. We’ve never beaten them at the Creek.”
Indeed club president Greg Haire remembers one day when the Roos led by 20 points but still got beaten at David Taylor Park.
“We’re looking to break that record,” Shane Rampling said.
“It’s not going to be easy. We’ve just got to hold the ball.”
The Roos were guilty of coughing up possession a number of times in last Sunday’s Preliminary Final win over Kootingal.
“We’ve got to be better. We talked about it at training this week and worked on a few things. We’ve got to start well and get in the grind too.”
If they do he believes the Roo forwards can dictate.
“Both sides have big packs,” Rampling added.
Werris Creek coach Dave Stewart believes his side is ready to bounce back from the 62-24 loss to Moree in last Saturday’s Major Semi.
They led 20-12 nearing halftime but fell away in the second half. This week the Magpies trained well as a club.
“Had a great night Tuesday night,” Stewart said.
“All four teams trained together. Just had a fun night to reward everyone for such a good year. Everyone enjoyed it.”
It was “back to business” on Thursday night as the Magpies prepare for four massive games.
“It’s an unbelievable result for such a small town and club,” Stewart said.
“The main thing is that everyone gets on and we are surrounded by so many good people.”
Saturday’s Preliminary Finals kick off at 10.25 am with the Ladies league Tag Preliminary Final followed by the Under 18’s (12 noon kickoff) and Reserve Grade (1.25pm).
