Two events are being held this week in Tamworth for National Archaeology Week, including the opportunity for older children to get involved in a table-top dig.
National Archaeology Week aims to increase public awareness of Australian archaeology and the work of Australian archaeologists both at home and abroad, and to promote the importance of protecting Australia’s unique archaeological heritage.
Held in the third week of May, this nationwide program of events and activities includes public lectures, seminars, exhibitions, demonstration excavations, displays, and other events designed to engage with the general public.
Tomorrow at the Tamworth Library, local archaeologist Lyle Douglas will help you to unearth treasures at our table-top dig, and teach you how to classify findings by rim charting.
If you are interested in a career in archaeology, this is your chance to ask a real archaeologist anything! Ages 8-14 welcome, and no booking required. Simply come downstairs in Tamworth City Library on Tuesday 23 May 3.30pm-6pm.
On Thursday, UNE Tamworth will be the site for a number of talks about the archaeology of Tamworth.
UNE alumnus Lyle Douglas, from Moss Environmental, will endeavour to explain the archaeological discipline, how archaeology works within Australia and specifically NSW as a planning tool to safeguard heritage.
Local historical archaeologist Melinda Gill will provide a focused talk around the archaeological fabric that Tamworth has within its community.
Cultural Consultant Len Waters, a passionate educator of Aboriginal heritage, will identify the hidden Indigenous archaeology of Tamworth that has been intertwined into the region.
The presentations will be followed by a light supper with tea and coffee.
