Tamworth Magpie, Liam Allan, will lead the charge for the club’s inaugural Reconciliation Round this weekend against the Barbarians.
Embracing the spirit of diversity, respect and unity, Tamworth Rugby Union Magpies will celebrate rugby and reconciliation when the run onto the field, donning a new jersey.
“It really hits home as a proud Indigenous player.” Said Liam, fly half for the Tamworth Magpies.
“I am a proud Gamilaraay man and both my parents are Indigenous, so it’s really nice to represent my culture while playing a sport I love.”
For Liam’s dad, Glen, he couldn’t be prouder of the man Liam has become.
“I get pretty emotional about it all, Liam has always been a leader and a doer, and we are so proud of him.” said Glen.
“We will be there on the weekend cheering him on and we are very thankful to the club for supporting Liam and giving him this opportunity with Reconciliation Round in rugby.”
The Reconciliation Round jersey’s will be up for auction following the game, an opportunity for all to be part of the big day.
“It is a day to celebrate my culture with everyone and it is something I have always wanted to as a football player.” said Liam.
“Footy is basically one big family and this is a way for us to share who we are and expose people to our Indigenous culture.”
“I would love to see it carried on an annual event”
Reconciliation Round will be played at the Magpies last home game of the season, as they look to secure a win for round 13.
“We have had a few injuries the last couple of weeks, but everyone is back, so we are taking a full-strength team into the game and get us over the line.”
Tamworth Magpies will take on the Barbarians Saturday July 29th at Rugby Park off Marius Street.
In other matches over the weekend, Albies will host Robb at Bellevue Oval and Armidale Blues will travel to Glen Innes to go up against the Elks.
