He has been saying it for years, but finally, this Saturday, Simon Trappel will run out at his home field at Pirate’s Rugby Park for the last time.

After 21 years donning the Pirate jersey, Simon will be retiring his playing boots.

“This year it is going to happen.” said Simon.

“It has been a good year, but I have realised I am a bit older and slower than I usually am and I have a few niggling injuries that I can’t get rid of, and I hit 300 games this season, which was a great milestone and if we can get a couple Grand Final wins it’ll be good to go out on a high.”

It will be a celebration both on an off the field, as Simon looks forward to spending more time at home with two daughters, Millie and Elsie, and his supportive wife, April.

“Millie, is playing sport so its time to look after and be there for her, look after my kids, my wife and my family.”

21 years and over 300 games certainly racks up the memories but for Simon there are clear winners on his rugby career highlight reel.

“One of my biggest highlights was in 2017, it was the first-grade premiership we were undefeated and playing with my brother, James, he was half back, and I was full back.” said Simon.

“But making my 300 games was pretty special.”

“I didn’t know what the club had planned, but playing with old players who I first played with when I came to Pirates was pretty cool.”

While he may not be playing on the field, Simon’s future and involvement in the club will remain, with other opportunities on the horizon.

“I still want to be involved with the club but take a backward step.” Said Simon.

“I would love to coach but not just yet, I need a little bit of break first.”

“I want to be able to go down and watch, and enjoy, a game of football every second Saturday and relax.”

Simon will run out with Pirate’s Second grade team tomorrow, as they look to defeat the Moree Bulls and secure another premiership for the Pirates trophy cabinet.

“It will be tough in both grades but if we come with the right attitude and willing to work for each other I think we will be ok and hopefully get the win.”
