Progress is being made on the new Quirindi Aquatic Centre with Liverpool Plains Shire Council securing local contractor Mac Demo for the demolition of the existing swimming pool site.
Following extensive lobbying to the State Government to upgrade the almost 100-year-old pool Council secured a commitment of $6.6 million to entirely build a new aquatic centre. Much of the existing Quirindi Pool infrastructure had unfortunately reached its used-by date and consequently undertaking any partial upgrade of any of these facilities was unviable.
Demolition works are due to take place from early January to March 2024. Residents may already have noticed project signage has been installed and mesh fence coverings.
LPSC consulted with the community in 2023 to develop plans for the New Quirindi Aquatic Centre. The Council says this feedback was valuable in helping plan the new aquatic centre, which will feature:
- A new 50-m Olympic standard pool with 6 lanes and diving blocks
- Accessible ramp into the pool
- Kids wading pool
- Splash Pad Area
- BBQ facilities
- Dry play area.
“We are keen to get this project happening for the community, but is important that people understand this is a major construction project, not a repair of existing infrastructure, and it will take time”, said Mayor Doug Hawkins.
“The decision to close the pool over the summer holiday period was not made lightly. But the sooner we begin construction the sooner we can deliver the new Aquatic Centre”, he said.
In the meantime, LPSC is encouraging residents to make use of the upgraded facilities at the Werris Creek Memorial Pool and to enjoy some of the great activities planned there over the summer including Summer Splash events and Royal Lifesaving Swimvac learn to swim program in early January.
Entry to all patrons is also free on Australia Day and Liverpool Plains Shire Council offer a discounted pool entry to all primary and high school students that live within the Liverpool Plains Shire. The 50% discounted student entry is available to all primary and high school students for both single entry and season pass.
