Tenterfield’s 16 year old golf star Ellie Petrie will be one of just three amateurs taking to the course as part of a new championship event at Walcha this week.
The inaugural World Sand Greens Championship for Women Powered by Origin Energy will tee off on Wednesday, April 10th, and conclude on Thursday, April 11th, at Walcha Golf Club. A sponsors and Supporters pro am is on today.
The 36-hole tournament will see some of Australia’s best female professional golfers compete against players from over a dozen nations for a $140,000 purse.
Nicole Martin, Manager of tournaments at Golf NSW, said the world-first event attracted plenty of interest, especially from players who have never experienced golf on sand-based putting surfaces.
“Playing on sand greens is going to be a new experience for many of these players; they will need to adapt their games quickly and learn the craft of smoothing a putting surface in the correct way if they are to have any chance of taking the trophy.”
Some of the other stars set to tee it up this week include:
- Maria Jose Uribe Duran of Colombia: the 2024 Women’s NSW Open Champion.
- Joeng Min Cho of Korea: Former amateur world number one, and winner of the recent Women’s NSW Open Qualifying tournament at Duntryleague
- Kelsey Bennett of Mollymook, NSW: winner the WPGA Tour’s The Athena Tournament.
- Lydia Hall of Wales: Former British Ladies Masters Champion and recent winner of the Women’s NSW Open RQ at Dubbo
The Tournament will be broadcast live on the Free-To_Air streaming channel, 7plus.
